Supporting Information for the Role of Registered General Nurse, Band 5 (HMP Parc, Bridgend)

Dear Hiring Panel,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Registered General Nurse post at HMP Parc, Bridgend (Band 5). Below I outline how my skills, experience, and values align with the requirements of this role and with the mission of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

Clinical Skills, Experience & Knowledge

  • I am a registered general nurse with the NMC and hold current registration (essential requirement).

  • I have worked in a busy healthcare setting for over [X years], including on medical/surgical wards and community nursing. In those roles I managed acutely ill patients, provided wound care, administered medications, and carried out assessments and interventions under pressure (essential criteria).

  • I am used to working shifts including nights, weekends, and bank holidays, and I remain calm and professional when workloads are high.

  • I have experience with medication administration protocols, managing medical emergencies, and responding rapidly to changes in patient condition.

  • In my most recent role, I took on responsibility for health assessments, monitoring vital signs, and coordinating with other professionals (GPs, physiotherapists, social workers). I also have experience in record keeping, audit and quality improvement projects.

  • I have developed good clinical judgment and know when to escalate issues or seek support. I can act independently within guidelines, while always ensuring patient safety and liaising with supervisors when necessary.

Fit for the Prison Setting & Multi-displinary Work

  • While I have not yet worked in a prison environment, I have experience in challenging, constrained, and secure environments (e.g., mental health wards, high dependency units). I am confident I can adapt my practice to meet the needs of a custodial healthcare environment.

  • I understand the importance of collaborating with non-clinical staff (such as security or prison officers) and respecting institutional policies while maintaining patient dignity and confidentiality.

  • I believe my interpersonal skills will help me work well in a multi-disciplinary team that includes GPs, mental health specialists, third sector agencies, and prison staff. I listen, communicate clearly, and am open to feedback and learning.

Personal Qualities & Values

  • I am committed to compassionate, evidence-based care. I share the values of listening, learning and improving, which I see are core to CTM’s strategy.

  • I value respect, equality, and dignity in all patient encounters. I always strive to provide culturally sensitive care, respectful of each person’s background.

  • I am organised, reliable, and always aim to maintain a safe, therapeutic environment. I understand the importance of safeguarding, infection control, and safeguarding protocols.

  • I adapt well to change, remain calm under pressure, and manage multiple priorities.

Additional Skills & Desirable Qualities

  • I have conversational Welsh (Level 3 / B2) (or I am willing to develop this skill). I understand that it is a desirable attribute though not essential.

  • I am keen to learn and grow. I would welcome opportunities for further training, leadership roles, or involvement in quality improvement within the health board.

  • I can use electronic health record systems, data entry, and audit tools efficiently.

  • I hold a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (or I am willing to obtain one) and can meet any required security clearance.

Why I Want This Role & How I Will Contribute

  • I am motivated by the idea of making a difference in an underserved population. Working in a prison setting offers the chance to deliver essential physical health services, to help prevent hospital transfers, and to support a vulnerable group.

  • I believe my mix of clinical competence, compassion, adaptability, and willingness to learn will allow me to become a strong contributor to your team.

  • I will bring commitment, professional integrity, and a positive, collaborative attitude. I aim not only to meet expectations but to support continuous improvement in patient care and team operations.
